[Tech Leaks] Razer reportedly developing a smartphone for ‘hardcore gamers’

Back in January, Nexbit announced that the company was being acquired by Razer. While nothing had been confirmed prior to the acquisition, Razer, a company that makes high-end gaming accessories and laptops, was rumored to be working on its own smartphone.

According to a source for Bloomberg, Razer is currently preparing to file for an initial public offering at the Hong Kong stock exchange. Having sold more than $1 billion in products over the last three years and holding a dominant position in the estimated $117 billion global video gaming industry, Razer is hoping for a valuation between $3 and $5 billion.

As Razer is known for its gaming products, it would be safe to assume that its smartphone will be designed with gaming in mind. The company’s acquisition of Nextbit and the Android-powered Ouya gaming system will hopefully help the company produce a smartphone that is, according to Bloomberg, “tailored for its consumer base of hardcore gamers.”

The news arrives alongside speculation regarding Razer Inc’s upcoming Initial Public Offering (IPO) in Hong Kong. Razer filed initial paperwork for this at the end of June, and rumors at the time suggested the company could be valued at upwards of $600 million. In the recent Bloomberg report, it’s said that Razer could be valued at between $3 and 5 billion in the IPO when it lists in October.


Manufacturers have tried various different kinds of gaming-oriented smartphones over the years, but none have really caught on. At the same time, mobile gaming is a completely different beast from the world of console and PC gaming — people don't want a phone that just does games well, it has to do everything well. A phone like the Galaxy S8 or HTC U11 is a fine "gaming" phone for most people already ... so what could Razer bring to the table?

We could find out soon. With an IPO looming and development surely already under way, we're sure to hear more about a Razer phone in the near future.
