[TechLeaks] Pixel XL 2 may have Ambient Display Always On, Squeez while Screen Off, Multiple Display Profiles etc

The larger “taimen” Pixel XL in particular will feature a 5.99-inch display with a 1440p OLED panel provided by LG, seemingly a consequence of LG’s recent investments in their display division to sate increasing OLED panel demand. The device will also be coming with a Snapdragon 835 and will feature a similar two-tone glass and metal finish on the back, though we noted that the glass window is located near the top and that it no longer encloses the fingerprint scanner. A render provided by Android Police  report, closely matches the design information. The device seemingly borrows inspiration not only from the Pixel XL, but also the LG G6.

XDA-Developers has also obtained information about the upcoming Pixel XL’s software feature set, which is explained below, from a source familiar with the matter. The specifics of these software features might change by the time the phone is finalized, we believe xda gives us some insight into what Google is trying to achieve with this release.

Ambient Display Always On

First things first, Google is seemingly making the most of their efforts to secure a quality OLED panel by adding useful display functionality. The Pixel XL 2 will feature an “Always On” option in its display settings, allowing the phone’s screen to display useful information and notifications while the device is locked and idle. We knew Google was working on such a feature, as last week xda found of a doze_always_on toggle in the O Developer Preview 3’s SystemUIGoogle.apk file (“doze” refers to Ambient Display in Android source code).

Possible Squeeze Frame Uses

Android Police had also reported that the Pixel XL would feature a squeezable frame, and we can corroborate this information as we’ve learned about its role in the phone’s user experience. Not unlike the HTC U11’s squeezable frame, you’ll be able to use the shortcut to launch Google Assistant when the screen is on or off. You will also be able to adjust the squeezing intensity threshold so that you can find a comfortable level of pressure to trigger the shortcut. Google also plans on adding extra functionality to the pressure sensitive frame, such as the ability to silence incoming calls.

Display Profiles

The sRGB mode we’ve been enjoying since Google’s later Nexus days will leave its secluded spot behind Developer Options, and moving to the normal Display settings. It will be accompanied by a “Vivid Colors” option, suggesting Google is focusing a bit more on display customization this time around.

Miscellaneous Features

There are also some smaller pieces of information we’ve gathered. The easter egg feature in the Android O build our source became familiar with involved an octopus in the ocean, which seems unrelated to the Android version name we eagerly await. The system UI’s color palette will go back to the darker default theme we saw in earlier O Developer previews; it seems that the light theme set by default in Android O DP3 might have been a test or a mishap. When setting up the new Pixel XL 2, you are also taken to g.co/pixelphonetour (currently not working, obviously), and there might be a new system font as well.

That’s all we’ve learned so far, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated on any new details we get a hold of or any reports that surface on the web. For more Pixel news, stay tune!

[TechLeaks] Moto X4 image leaks showing off glass back, dual camera, thin side bezels

Update: The first image of the Moto X4 has leaked (see above). It was recently posted on Twitter by Evan Blass and shows the front as well as the back of the upcoming smartphone. The device looks a lot like the rest of the Moto lineup with its large circular camera housing on the rear and the fingerprint scanner positioned on the front, below the screen. The image shows the gold version of the Moto X4, although we do expect to see it in a few other color options once it’s officially released. One of the smartphones we’re really looking forward to from Motorola this year isn’t a refresh to the Moto Z , but rather the return of the Moto X lineup in the Moto X4. With specs and rumors flying around, Evan Blass has taken to Twitter to share the first good look at the upcoming device. The latest addition to the Moto X lineup, the Moto X4, is expected to be a return to the Motorola that once got us excited , at least to an extent. Whereas the Moto Z line focuses on premium sp...

[Phone Launch] Xiaomi launches its first Android One smartphone named Mi A1

Xiaomi unveiled the Mi A1 earlier today in New Delhi, and the phone marks a shift in strategy for the manufacturer. While all Xiaomi phones thus far have featured MIUI, the Mi A1 offers stock Android. The phone is the first in a new lineup of Android One devices, with Google looking to aggressively target the budget segment in emerging markets. The highlight of the Mi A1 is its dual camera setup at the back with a 12 MP wide-angle and a 12 MP telephoto lens. The 50 mm telephoto lens captures the main image and the wide-angle lens assists with the depth of field measurement, and the two lenses work together to create a bokeh. The telephoto lens enables up to 2x optical zoom and for even further shots, Mi A1 offers up to 10x digital zoom. Also, like the Pixel and Pixel XL by Google in the past, the Mi A1 offers unlimited high-quality photo storage on Google Photos. Xiaomi Mi A1 Specifications Operating System Android 7.1.2 Nougat Display 5.5-inch IPS LCD 192...

[Tech News] Google Chrome Canary and Dev Builds now have Built-In Ad Blocker

Google depends on advertising for its revenue. It is to serve this purpose that the company collects all relevant data across all of its users. Our browsing habits, our shopping-related searches, our weekly schedule — all of these are of interest to Google because they grant an insight into our lives, allowing Google to serve personalized ads that have a higher chance to resonate with viewers. So earlier this year, when reports emerged that Google was looking to incorporate an ad blocker in Google Chrome  – its main browser that serves millions of Android users – many people were initially surprised. After all, ads are Google’s forte, so blocking them natively seems like a strange idea. However, the reports clarified that even though the ad blocker would be turned on by default, it will only block out those specific types of ads that are deemed too intrusive and that negatively affect a user’s browsing experience. Some users on Google Chrome’s Canary and...
